I saw a this Mini Boden shirt and thought, wow, that would make such a cute quilt. :) So I sketched out a similar camper and paper pieced the body. I top stitched all the details on, i.e. the window, door, tire, and hitch. I’m not that good at paper piecing so I went with the top stitch look.
This part, the camper with the white background and polka dot border sat around in my sewing space for awhile. I couldn’t figure out the perfect border to make it bigger. Then it hit me a fun striped patchy border. So I grabbed lots of bright prints, cut a bunch of strips, and sew the border up. I kind of did a fun strayed affect on the corners. Don’t have a close up of that though.
I tried quilting it a bunch of ways, stippling, loopy, pebble, straight lined, yes all of those on parts till I had it half done. I didn’t like any of them because my machine kept acting up, so they were all looking super sloppy. I finally decided on this simple wavy line across the whole thing. I could use a walking foot, it would have made it a bit easier, but I really like this look all finished.
I put a simple woodsy print on the back, from the Happier Collection by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake. It is bound in a lovely mustard mini houndstooth, Denyse Schmidt for Joanns line. It got all soft and crinkly in the wash. Love it.
I am not sure the actual size. Maybe 18″ x 24″. I sent it off to someone as a surprise. Hopefully they got it or will get it early next week. I often make things just because I can’t get an idea out of my head. But then don’t always want to keep them/don’t know what to do with them. So I like to send them to people that I know or think will love them. Plus it’s the best when you get real mail and it’s fun, handmade real mail. :)
I may share this paper pieced pattern in the future. I am not sure if I may use this to make products in my shop or not. I also have an image in my head of a giant camper quilt, or even a campground quilt? So that may happen in the future. :)
Thanks for stopping by!
this is so so cute….i love the trailer!!! the borders are awesome. how did you do the corners?
Holy cow!
I just got home from a week of spring break and guess what was in my mailbox?????
You will never, ever guess.
I almost died.
But instead did a 15 minute happy dance.
Now. . .
where to hang her?
Do you think you will share your method for making the camper?
I just have to say, your interpretation is way cuter than the original inspiration. :-)
Oh my goodness gracious this is adorable! How much would you charge to recreate it? We inherited a camper a few years ago and I’ve always dreamed of making it over.
I know I could piece the camper myself but I’m too chicken to quilt yet. The only one I’ve ever made was a gift for my sisters baby shower(http://www.handbagsnpigtails.com/2011/08/my-big-sister-is-having-baby.html) and wasn’t what Id call a real quilt anyways. It was a “cheater.” :)
Do you sell a pattern for Luke’s Lion Head quilt? I would love to buy it if you have that pattern.
HI,
Just made one of these today, and LOVE it! I have been wanting to make a pieced camper and yours screamed the cuteness I was looking for so I used yours as inspiration. Not sure if mine is going to be a pillow, a quilt square, or a wall hanging…just going to stare at a bit longer before I decide.
Love it! Thank you!! Happy Day!
