The story behind the Cat Pouch

The Cat Pouch was the very first pattern in what became my animal pouch collection. I love the way the zipper sits right between the two sets of ears, it gives the pouch such a distinctive cat face shape. This is one of those patterns that's just fun to sew. It's a nice-sized pouch that works for all kinds of uses, and you can add tabs and a strap to turn it into a little cat purse if you want.

About the Pattern

The pattern includes 7 pattern pieces and written instructions with 24 color photos walking you through every step. A complete supply list and cut list get you started, then you follow the photos through construction. You only need about a fat quarter each of your main fabric and lining. Knowing how to sew a zipper is helpful, though I did have one pattern tester for whom this was her first zipper, so don't let that stop you. A 9-inch zipper works perfectly.

One Pattern, Endless Options

A few fun ways you can make this pattern your own.

1

Pouch or purse

Sew it as a zippered pouch, or add fabric tabs and a strap to turn it into a little cat purse. The pattern includes optional strap instructions and hardware options like lobster claws or D-rings.

2

Fabric play

Use a coordinating fabric for the face insert and ears, a scrap as small as 8x8 inches is all you need. A polyester zipper lets the pouch lay flatter than a metal one.

What Makers Are Saying

★★★★★

Great pattern, good and a little bit of challenge for a beginner but not too much. We were able to complete the project (my 6 year old and I) in about 1.5 hours. The only hang up was the final placement of the inside pouch to the outside of the bag and then turning the completed project and I think that was due to my beginners pattern reading. Will be purchasing more projects to work on!
