The Sardine Pillow is a fun idea I had a while ago. Like so long and I just thought this spring that I was going to make one already!! So I took some time and made a Sardine Pillow and can I just say, I love it! But also SOOOO many people loved it when I shared on Instagram it seemed like a no brainer to make it a pattern! So a little over a month later that’s where we are at! The Sardine Pillow Pattern release after being fully tested buy some lovely ladies!

Thanks so much to my group of testers! Check them out on Instgram.

Pattern Details

The Sardine Pillow Pattern will allow you to make a 36″ long or a 24″ long Sardine Pillow. The size differenece is so funny though. The big guy is like a body pillow and the small one is like a mini baguette. For real!

The pattern comes with 3-5 files. One is the written instructions with pictures for the step by step sewing instructions and a link to the step by step YouTube hosted video. The other 4 file are the pattern pieces. The 36″ sized patterns pieces in 8.5″ x 11″ printing format and then in A4 printing format, and the same for the 24″ sized pattern pieces. Disclaimer here. I added the A4 sizes last minute and fingers cross they work since I didn’t have an A4 printer to test it. :) Which I hate to do. But one of my testers prints in A4 size and mentioned the 24″ printed fine, but the 36″ she had to fudge a little. So fingers crossed this helps.

The pattern has multiple options you can sew from the same pattern peices. A Sardine from one fabric, a Sardine with a body fabric and seperate head, or a fully pieced sardine with two body fabrics, a head fabric, and the optional flipper. you can add a top fin to any option and make any options two sided so it’s pieced on both sides. Or make your Sardine Pillow one sided, only pieced on one side with a single fabric on the back.

To sew up any of the pieced options you will have slight curves. But they are very light and I have extra pictures in the pattern to help and the video shares some tips.

Speaking of the video you can watch that prior to purchasing the pattern if you like. You will need the pattern to make a Sardine Pillow as you need the pattern pieces. But the video may help convince you that you can sew it!

All the Sardines!

This pattern is addicting! I mean I get it we don’t even need a Sardine Pillow but somehow I have like 12 or more now. Lol. So just beware! You are going to want to make multiple options and try out so manhy fabric combos!

Speaking of which! Don’t let combining fabrics scare you! Just go for it! Think about how busy the prints are together, coordinate some of the colors, and just have fun!

What’s Next?

Well a Sardine Tin FPP pattern is in the works in a horizontal and a vertical version. Along with a free download to, it will be included in that pattern as well, to make a tin fish can to store your Sardines in! Here’s a sneak peak of the FPP pattern. Still in the beginning stages but I am hoping to have multiple size in both so you can make a mini or make a the Tin Pillow. Working towards the end of July for release! Wish me luck!

Sardine Mods!

I ended up making a few Sardines with some fun ideas. I have a YouTube video all about all the mods below plus some. How I did them, some tips, and my issues. lol. YouTube Video Link.

I also did one with needle turn applique on the front. That was alot of fun, but I am a total novice at needle turned applique so I can give you no advice other than watch some YouTube and try it!

I also did some on point square patchwork! This is in the pattern for making. I had a tester do some stright square patchwork and that was so cute to! If you want to do any patchwork for the body without the head you need roughly a 8″ tall x 31″ wide patchwork panel. I can’t wait to see what you do!

I am also working on trying to figure out flappy clamshells! It’s been a struggle that my brain has not had the space to figure out yet. I will be sure to update if I figure it out, and add a downloadable clamshell shape. It’s the bottom one in the picture below. And while the actual clamshell shape looked great you would have to topstitch it down and that’s fine, but not what I wanted. Any suggestions? I’ll share my work on it in my video even if it hasn’t been fully hashed out.
