Book Date Patchwork Quilt Release

Book Date Patchwork Quilt Release

Surprise I am releasing the Book Date Patchwork Quilt today! This kind of came about quickly and I unexpectedly. I have shared this pattern as a 1 page freebie to my newsletter subscribers in the past. But I updated the pattern a bit and now it’s a 5 page long in depth pattern. It has more info and cutting for single fabric books instead of patchwork books.

It includes a coloring sheet for easy planning of your own color scheme.

This is a quick and fun pattern to make! Using all squares and HSTs, unless you make the Single Fabric Books. I love it as a gift quilt becuase you can personalize the books with the names of the recipents fabovorites.

Book Embroidery

Like I said above this a great quilt to customize. I have made the books with quilted names on the spines, as well as embroidered spines. I personally prefer the embroidered version as I think it’s a little bit bolder. But depending on your thread color choice quilted names would pop too.

How to Embroider:

Before quilting, use a removeable marking pen to write the name of the book on the spine. Use 6 strands of DMC embroidery floss or comparable thicker thread backstitch or chain stitch over your marked book name.

Alternately you could print the name out on Freezer Paper or Sulky Solvy and use that attached to the quilt top to emborider on. Sulky Solvy is sticky and attaches easily by sticking to the fabric, then it soaks away with water. Freeze Paper can be ironed on and then torn away after embroidered.

The area to keep letters inside varies from the Top Book to the Bottom Book. Use the dimensions below to help you determine the size of your letters.

Top Book: 2.5″tall x 17″wide is the max dimensions you should keep the letters within.

Middle + Bottom Book: 5″ x 26″ is the maz dimensions you should keep the letters within.

How to Quilt:

Wether you are free motion quilting on a domestic machine or a longarm, you can free motion quilt book names on the spines this way. Ideally you will mark the name on the spine with a marking pen prior to basting. Or if you are planning more of a cursive style font mark the beginning and end of the name so you can keep the name in the proper size format. And then free motion quilt over the marked letters, starting and stopping at each letter. Or if using cursive the letters will be connected.

For free motion quilting I like to sometimes go over the letters multiple times to thicken the letters.

Book Date Patchwork Quilt Mock Ups

For some of these Mock Ups here I share a patterned background. This is a fun option that you can easily acheive by coloring the coloring sheet to the colors and pattern you want. Then count the individual colors to know the quantity to cut.
