As the Something Wicked QAL Week 1 comes to a close I wanted to share a bit here for future Something Wicked makers.

I don’t know if you can tell from this quilt but I LOVE fabric. I love collecting fabric, and using fabric, and I really really love selecting fabrics for different color stories, projects, and just sometimes to relax. Which may be why this fabric is so scrappy and fun.

Week 1 was all about picking fabric. The Something Wicked Quilt and all the expansion pack versions call for 26 background fabrics, and 7-9 fabrics for the main feature weather it be a witch hat, santa hat, candy corn, or a tree version.

While yes this is a lot of fabrics it allows for the super scrappy look of the quilt above. The beauty of this pattern though is you can really make the look your own by using as few or as many fabrics as you choose. We have some fun fabric pulls popping up on the quilt a long hashtag on Instagram. Some good inspiration for sure.

For the Halloween pull above I started with The Spooky and Sweet Line from Art gallery Fabrics and pulled some coordinating blenders and a couple Halloween fabrics from my stash. I also decided to use the Rifle Paper Co. Black and gold stars for the witch hat. Yes, that’s right, one fabric. I will still cut it up into the pieces the pattern calls for and piece it as normal. While having larger sections in the hat may be nice this way will work just fine.

I am also making a Santa Hat version. I am using the above fabrics. The full line of Flurry from Ruby Star Society, all the striped blenders from Rashida Coleman Hale’s line POP, and blenders from my stash. I pulled a bunch of other reds and blenders from my stash and decent amount of those are Alison Glass.

Just something to keep in mind, while I am using specific holiday lines of fabric for these respective quilts many of the blenders are not holiday fabrics. The very scrappy nature of this quilt allows you to not use any Holiday fabrics at all. You can simply use fabrics of a specific color palette which is helpful if your on a spending break or a fabric diet. Of course using the cute holiday fabrics is so much fun as well. The scrappy version above is made from very minimal Halloween fabrics because would you believe me when I tell you I did not used to have many Halloween fabrics. But my goodness it is hard to resist them now. ;)
